On July 29th, 2024, I spent the day at the Resurrection Garden in Karen, Kenya. A serene setting, for those seeking quiet time in prayer and meditation. It has multiple sanctuaries, gardens and gazebos, with huge tablets filled with scripture. They have signs everywhere written “Silence”. So, I did not speak to anyone all day! There were many others like me, praying and meditating in silence.
Towards the end of the day, as I was waiting for my ride, I turned on my phone and started listening to music close to the entrance as I observed in silence as people walked out of the Garden.
Then one young lady, with a baby strapped to her back and accompanied by a 14–15-year-old boy walked by me. I don’t know why but I said to her “How are you?”, breaking my day of silence. She answered me quietly and kept walking. Then she turned around and came back to me, which kind of surprised me. She asked if I could help her get a job, anything, like washing clothes, cleaning, or any housework. She had gone to the Garden to pray for a job so that she could take care of her 2 children!
I told her that I did not have such a job to offer her but said I’d take her number and ask around. She gave me her number and I gave her mine. I then gave her the little money I had on me.
The following day I talked to my friend who owns an office cleaning company and she, without hesitation, said she would give her a job. I gave her my new friend’s number, I did not even know her name, I had saved her as ‘the lady at the resurrection garden’.
Two days after I had met her, my new friend called me to ask if I had any news on a job for her. I told her that she would get a call from someone in the coming days. She then apologized in advance for what she was about to say. She went ahead and asked me if I could give her some money, no matter how little, because she had nothing at all.
My first instinct was to think that she was taking advantage of me. I almost felt some resentment towards her for asking me for money, even after I had offered to help her. After all, she was just a stranger to me! Then I felt in my spirit that I needed to help her. So, I sent her some money.
Later that day, as I went through my journal, I read what I had written the night before my visit to the Garden as my goals for my day alone with God. The first goal I had written was “To seek the face of God”. I don’t know what this means and why I wrote it down! But as I read it, I understood that God had shown me His face, as Mathew 25:35-40, came to my mind:
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger, and you welcomed me… (40) And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’”
She had spent a number of days at the Resurrection Garden in deep prayer, asking God to help her get a job so that she can provide for her two children. I thank God that my friend was able to get this young lady a job. God does indeed work in mysterious ways!
I share this testimony so that you too can seek the face of God, it is with the people around us! Cynthia was the face of God to me that day. Look around you for the face of Jesus, He is all around us!
